Site Setting Wednesday Hill Road remains one of the more strikingly beautiful roads in Lee, and it functions as a moderately used country road thoroughfare for people commuting from the west to the University of New Hampshire in Durham. As vehicles either come down Wednesday Hill Road or approach from around the bend from the east, the view of green open fields, the restored 18th century colonial farmhouse and mid-19th century barn provide an outstanding example of New Hampshire’s agricultural legacy. More often than not, cars slow to view the scene. Chelsey Brook, one of the headwaters of the Oyster River, a major water supply source for Durham, begins within the parcel.
The configuration of the land creates substantial edge effects of forest, meadow and hayfield, resulting in a wealth of wildlife habitat. Herds of deer, flocks of wild turkey, packs of coyotes along with partridge, Canada goose, great blue heron, and red-tail hawk make almost daily appearances during much of the year as they move through and utilize this land and adjacent undeveloped or farmed land (close to 500 acres) for food and shelter. We even see the occasional moose, black bear and fisher cat amble across.
