How big do elk get?
Our full-grown bulls range from about 850 to 1000 pounds. Our full-grown cows are smaller, from about 450 to 650 pounds. Newly born calves weigh about 30 pounds. Elk are fairly tall, ranging from 4.5 to 5.5 feet at the shoulder. Bulls are about a foot or so taller than the cows. Bull elk can grow to lengths of up to 8 feet.
What color are elk?
Elk have white rumps along with a dark red-brown body and a darker brown mane. When calves are born in the spring, they have spots, just like deer. The spots fade by late summer.
Prior to winter, elk grow heavy coats to survive the cold, but they shed the fur in spring and early summer. They look pretty ratty when that happens, but eventually they get rid of the nasty-looking fur and come out sleek and grey-brown for the summer.
